about

I love old churches. I'm not sure why as I'm not a religeous person, but I've always loved the sound of them, especially when it's quiet. Near where we go for our holidays sometimes is the empty and rarely used 12th century Cruggleton Church, which stands alone within a square, round cornered and tree-filled enclosure in the middle of a field. Whenever you visit the church it is locked up and so not knowing what is inside lends an extra element of mystique to what is already a strange building.

However, one day whilst recording the sounds of the sea at a nearby beach I met one of the locals who knew where I could obtain the key, and so I arranged to place my recording equipment in the church overnight to find out what it sounds like. Had I the nerve I might've camped out overnight there as well, but as others have said it's a little unsettling there and as it was February I decided to retreat to our warm holiday cottage and let the church look after itself.

I recorded a total of 16.5hrs of audio before the batteries on my equipment ran out, and listening back it turned out a furious storm rolled in overnight, howling wind, driving rain, and all sorts of bangs and cracking noises can be heard. As 16.5hrs is a little too long I've split the night into small chunks, and the audio presented here is that as captured at the top of each hour. Is the church haunted? I'll let you decide.

released September 29, 2022

Recorded overnight on 15th to 16th February 2022, using the Sony PCM D100. Edited from the origianl 16.5hr recording and mastered by Paul Mallatratt, August 2022. These tracks were recorded live in an unused church, and every care has been taken to present them in as natural way as possible. Unlike the other volumes of the Ambient Series so far, these tracks are in an unprocessed form (apart from the editing of course). I have decided to do this so that contrast between day and night, calm and storm, and the various cracking, creaking, howling and dripping can be heard in all their glory. The volume levels of the different tracks varies considerably as a result. I hope you don’t mind.

about

Paul Mallatratt England, UK

I have been making music in one form or another since the mid-1970s, but only started experimenting and creating electronic music at the turn of the millennium. Bite The Wax Tadpole was my first project, but I also play the bass professionally and record and tour throughout the year (viruses allowing). I now release ambient electronic and field recording music under my own name. ... more
