about

Sonitus Maris 2 is a second collection of ambient, field recordings from the southwest of Scotland and north east of England. The sounds of the sea are a favourite of millions of people, as they help to ground you and relieve stress and anxiety. These recordings were made at different locations on the coast in numerous different weather conditions, from calm sunny days with the water gently lapping against the shore, to ferocious storm like conditions with angry and enormous crashing waves. Listen whilst working, as a way to unwind, or to aid restful sleep. Listen on headphones for a more immersive, binaural, ASMR experience.

released December 1, 2022

Recorded between August 2020 and New Years Eve 2021, using the Sony PCM D100 and Tascam HD-P2 portable digital audio recorders, and Audio Technica AT8022 stereo microphone. Mixed and mastered by Paul Mallatratt, January 2022. These tracks were recorded live in the great outdoors, and every care has been taken to present them in as natural way as possible. Audio processing has been used to filter out over-loud wind noise directly into the microphones when the furry windjammers weren’t enough, and to balance the volume levels between the tracks. A small amount of editing has been employed to remove alarming distractions unsuitable for meditative and calming listening (e.g. close and sudden traffic noise, farm and grass cutting machinery, bees flying uncomfortably close to the microphones, etc). The field recording purists would no doubt be incensed with this approach, but my intention is a relaxing listening experience rather than the natural world in its purest form. I hope you don’t mind.

about

Paul Mallatratt England, UK

I have been making music in one form or another since the mid-1970s, but only started experimenting and creating electronic music at the turn of the millennium. Bite The Wax Tadpole was my first project, but I also play the bass professionally and record and tour throughout the year (viruses allowing). I now release ambient electronic and field recording music under my own name. ... more
