about

Psithurism is a collection of ambient, field recordings from the southwest of Scotland where I spend my holidays. They help me to remember good times and take me back to my happy place. The sounds of wind in the trees and the rustling of leaves have enchanted many people over time. Psithurism comes from the Greek word psithuros, which means whispering, and is pronounced sith-err-iz-um. These recordings were made at different locations around the 12th Century Cruggleton Church which stands within a square, round cornered and tree-filled enclosure in the middle of a field. The different locations and use of different recorders produces subtle differences in the tone of the trees, and the variation of wind speed leads to an hypnotic listening experience. Listen whilst working, as a way to unwind, or to aid restful sleep. Listen on headphones for a more immersive, binaural, ASMR experience although as these recordings are primarily a form of white noise please listen at a comfortable lower volume to avoid fatigue.

Recorded between 17th and 22nd August 2021, using the Sony PCM D100 and Tascam HD-P2 portable digital audio recorders, and Audio Technica AT8022 stereo microphone. Mixed and mastered by Paul Mallatratt, September 2021. These tracks were recorded live in the great outdoors, and every care has been taken to present them in as natural way as possible. Audio processing has been used to filter out over-loud wind noise directly into the microphones when the furry windjammers weren’t enough, and to balance the volume levels between the tracks. A small amount of editing has been employed to remove alarming distractions unsuitable for meditative and calming listening (e.g. close and sudden traffic noise, farm and grass cutting machinery, bees flying uncomfortably close to the microphones, etc). The field recording purists would no doubt be incensed with this approach, but my intention is a relaxing listening experience rather than the natural world in its purest form. I hope you don’t mind.

about

Paul Mallatratt England, UK

I have been making music in one form or another since the mid-1970s, but only started experimenting and creating electronic music at the turn of the millennium. Bite The Wax Tadpole was my first project, but I also play the bass professionally and record and tour throughout the year (viruses allowing). I now release ambient electronic and field recording music under my own name. ... more
