about

A little explanation is needed for this one I think. Last year (late summer 2023) I read an article about an audio project called Sononaut that had created eight plug-ins (effects processors for digital audio) that emulate the atmospheric conditions of the planets in our solar system. You can find out more by following the link below which explains things very well. This gave me the idea for this album. Unlike other musical or orchestral suites based on the Planets, this is more atmospheric and geological than mythical or mystical (many composers far greater than I have those themes well covered) and fits with my love of ambient and experimental music, field recordings, and the sound of the world (or in this case, the worlds).

The purpose of the Sononaut plug-ins is to filter the sound of the audio passed through them to make it sound something like it would if you were standing on the surface of the individual planets, based on scientific research and artistic licence. I noticed however, when I ran the music “through” each effect, it rendered it almost unlistenable, which I suppose is what you might actually hear. Being more concerned with the music I decided to blend the atmospheric elements of each one into a track and mix the music with it. The resulting album is therefore a mix of drone/experimental/ambient music and atmospheric noise. I hope you enjoy it.

I would like to thank Stefana Fratila and her colleagues at Sononaut and NASA for creating the plug-ins and making them open source so everyone can use them. Huge thanks, as always, to Laura and my family for critical listening to multiple versions of the album and patience while I worked on it. And to my good friend, and fellow ambient music artist, D York for his magical mastering skills, most excellent ears, and wise words of critique and encouragement.

about

Paul Mallatratt England, UK

I have been making music in one form or another since the mid-1970s, but only started experimenting and creating electronic music at the turn of the millennium. Bite The Wax Tadpole was my first project, but I also play the bass professionally and record and tour throughout the year (viruses allowing). I now release ambient electronic and field recording music under my own name. ... more
